Winter in Oku Nikko:
Which Winter Activity Suits You?

During winter, Oku-Nikko transforms into a beautiful winter landscape. Snow blankets the wetlands of Senjogahara, creating a wide open snowy terrain, while surrounding forest trails are covered in deep snow. Together, these features- open marshlands, forest paths, and gentle slopes- create a diverse environment, making Oku-Nikko ideal for both snowshoeing and cross-country skiing.

So, what’s the difference between Snowshoes and Cross-country Skis?

While both snowshoes and cross-country skis are designed for moving across snowy landscapes, they offer very different ways to experience winter in Oku-Nikko.

What are Snowshoes?

Snowshoes are worn over winter boots and allow users to walk without sinking on the top of the snow. They are easy to use and require little to no training, making them ideal for beginners. Snowshoes work best on uneven terrain, such as forest trails and gently sloped areas, because they allow users to walk at a comfortable pace and adjust their steps easily.

What is Cross-country Skiing?

Cross-country Skiing (XC Skiing) uses long, narrow skis and poles to glide smoothly on snowy landscapes. This activity suits best for flat and gentle terrain, such as the Kotoku Farm area. Every year, a cross-country ski course is set up around Kotoku Astraea Hotel, near Sanbonmatsu Chaya. Although it takes some practice to learn balance and technique, cross-country skiing is perfect for those who want to spend more time exploring snow landscapes.

Key Differences at a glance

  • Snowshoes are best for forest trails and uneven paths, allowing you to walk at a relaxed pace.

  • Cross-country skis work best on wide, flat areas that let you glide smoothly, allowing you to travel farther and explore more in less time.
